THE FORTUNE COOKIES THEORY

Do you know what a fortune cookie is? Have you ever tried one? I don't like the taste as it is too sweet for me though

I have to admit it is fun to crack them open and read what "Goddess Fortune" has predicted for you.

For example, phrases like this may come up:

 

"Your efforts will be worthwhile", "A person close to you is more important than you think", "You will be rewarded for your patience and understanding", "You will never need to worry about a steady income", "Your talents will capture you the highest status and prestige".

 

I think fortune cookies are fun because if you are with friends and each one reads their fortune, you will probably end up laughing out loud, making jokes about it, etc.

 

But they are also romantic. Imagine yourself finishing dinner with your sweetheart/fiancé/husband/wife and sharing the so charming words of these short premonitions while sipping your coffee or tea. For example: "Someone you love will give you a surprise"

 

You could start asking yourself:

Is it going to be a diamond ring? (her)
Is it going to be the last Halo videogame? (him)
Is he/she going to break up with me? (negative thinking, avoid it)

 

However, the most plausible theory to make these fortune cookies believeable is what a friend of mine calls "The fortune cookies theory". I offered him one that I brought from Chinatown in L.A. and he told me that the only way to believe what fortune cookies tell you is to do a little addition to the presumed fate. Let's say it would be the only way that these little sentences might make sense and be more realistic.

 

And it goes like this: just add the words "in bed" at the end of each phrase and you will have:

 

"Your efforts will be worthwhile in bed", "A person close to you is more important than you think, in bed", "Someone you love will give you a surprise in bed", "You will be rewarded for your patience and understanding in bed", "You will never need to worry about a steady income in bed", and the best "Your talents will capture you the highest status and prestige in bed".

 

Isn't it a great and amazing theory? You can trust fortune cookies. Just try it next time you come over one.

SAN VALENTÍN Y OTRA FIESTAS

Qué bien que yo no creo en este tipo de fiestas y además procuro no practicarlas porque me parecen, entre otras cosas, crueles. Sí, crueles. Suena un poco fuerte y duro pero es la verdad. Regalos y felicidad; consumismo e hipocresía.

Se supone que estas fiestas celebran la alegría de determinadas situaciones o enaltecen figuras, por ejemplo, el día de la madre, el día del padre, etc. Pero ¿y si resulta que no tienes padre, o madre, o ninguno de los dos? de igual forma, ¿y si no tienes un amor en tu vida? Creo que no deja de ser una manera de que aquellos que no pueden celebrar por estos motivos lo pasen mal recordando su situación de falta de motivo para celebrar, valga la redundancia.

Tema aparte se merece la Navidad, que agudiza aún más la sensación de soledad y tristeza en aquellas personas que o han perdido seres queridos, o que no tienen familia, o pasan por una situación difícil ya sea por motivos de salud, trabajo, dinero. Desde niño te acostumbran a asociar felicidad con estas fechas pero luego la vida se va mostrando como es, dura e implacable cuando tiene que serlo, y además no entiende de fechas señaladas.

Yo creo que estas fiestas no deberían celebrarse en días concretos, coyuntura que el sector comercial aprovecha para beneficiarse del consumismo inducido y generado por ellos, si no pensar que la celebración está en el día a día por tener una madre, un padre, un amor, amigos, salud y, sobre todo, una vida.

Hay que celebrar la vida y, por eso, de esta quema se salvan los cumpleaños, que vienen a conmemorar que, afortunadamente, nacimos y continuamos aquí después de un año más.
